Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Websites & Articles

NCPedia is a great resource because it has tons of articles on North Carolina history, and the Civil Rights Movement is a topic that they had multiple articles on. The article I chose in particular explained the climate of North Carolina from pre-Civil War Era to the Civil Rights movement. It also explained the significance of African Americans from N.C. to the Civil Rights Movement such as the Greensboro four, and includes interviews from activists.
This website is great because it is solely dedicated to the Greensboro Sit-Ins. There are Headlines From the Times, which link to articles about the sit-ins, descriptions of key players in the protest, a gallery of photos, a timeline, and a look into the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. Students can really get to learn about how the Civil Rights Movement was fought for in their state, and gain some local history by using this website.
This activity book from teaching tolerance is really great because it gives students a chance to interact with history in a creative way. There are lots of different activities ranging from word searches to analyzing photos of the Civil Rights movement.
